Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Women of the ELCA at Prince of Peace need your Input and Support!

Many people have no idea how much the ministry of the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) does for Prince of Peace and for the Lutheran Church as a whole.  Just some of our ministries include:

  • Prayer Chain – Ginger Warren is the contact people for the prayer chain. She coordinates calls to several other people of our congregation who in turn call others in a chain-reaction fashion.  Within a short time special prayers and concerns are being raised to God by at least 20 dedicated people.

  • Meals on Wheels – Chaired by Sue McCommons for the past several years.  Sue coordinates volunteers to bake cookies and make sandwiches for Meals on Wheels recipients throughout our community.

  • Altar Care – Pam Yuhaniak and Ginger Warren arrange to have folks “set the Lord’s table” and prepare our chancel area and altar for worship each week.  This is one of the most important and visible ministries of the women of our church (though men can, and sometimes do, help!)  While this ministry takes some commitment on the part of those who serve, it can be very rewarding.  Please consider volunteering to help with Altar Care if you don’t already.

  • Funeral Luncheons – Chaired by Sheila Thompson and Ginger Warren .  There are always women available to help in the kitchen and to donate food for luncheons following funerals.  New people are always welcome to share your time and recipes.

On the Synod level we have several women who have attended Cluster meetings and the Spring Synod Convention as well as participating in gathering needed items for the Synodical Outreach Program.  While involvement in the past has largely been by the same group of women, ALL women who are members of POP are also members of Women of the ELCA and are invited to participate.

As of this writing, we need your input and advice regarding the future of WELCA at Prince of Peace.  In order to continue as an organization we need new involvement on our executive committee.  Perhaps you are the one with the talent and commitment to help us carry on.  In the past we have tried surveying the women of the congregation through questionnaires and the response was minimal.  Without more involvement and support from the women of our congregation WELCA is not likely to continue as we know it.  PLEASE let us know how this vital ministry can be of help to you and other women of our church, and continue to be of service to so many others through our outreach programs.  Meeting times, program topics, service projects and other activities are all ways we can serve the church and one another.  Please tell us what would work for you.  We are always open to your suggestions.

Thanks and God bless,

Shirley Kelley
