Living, Learning, Growing the Word of God
As the "Church on the Road to Mission", Prince of Peace puts an emphasis on outreach and mission both in our community and around the world. The purpose of this ministry is to extend Christian compassion and helpfulness to the ill, aged, orphaned, underprivileged, imprisoned and, in general, to persons of all ages in need of aid in body or soul. Some of our continuing projects include (but are not limited to) . . .
Union Mission: P.O.P. is actively involved with the men's homeless mission in Latrobe. Operation Fresh Express: Operation Fresh Express is an extension of the Westmoreland County Food Bank. Once each month (March through October) P.O.P. serves as the distribution point for fresh and frozen food to those local people on the food bank's roll. These distributions are staffed not only by the Food Bank personnel, but by members of local churches (including Prince of Peace). CROP WALK: Prince of Peace serves as the coordinator for the Greater Latrobe Area CROP WALK. The walk is held in the Spring of each year, and funds raised are donated to Church World Service for their work around the world. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised locally come back to the community and are divided between the Latrobe Food Pantry. Christmas Giving Tree and the Mitten Tree: During the days leading up to Christmas, Prince of Peace works to bring light to children on Christmas Day by working with local agencies to supply presents for families in need. Once the wish lists are filled, it is time to fill it with hats, mittens, scarves and gloves for the children in our community. These items are distributed between the local elementary schools. Meals on Wheels: Twice a year, members of Prince of Peace provide lunches for the local Meals on Wheels organization. Warm Hands Warm Hearts: P.O.P. has participated in this blanket drive for several years. Each winter, blankets and quilts (new or softly used) are collected and given to Smith Oil Company. In turn, these blankets are distributed to the needy in our community. Latrobe Food Pantry: Prince of Peace helps with food distribution at the Latrobe Food Pantry once a year and as needed. Women of the ELCA: The Prince of Peace Women of the ELCA group participates in outreach each year. In the past they have gathered items for Solder's Angels, the Red Cross and other designated outreach programs of the larger WELCA organization. Lenten Coin Folder: Each Lenten season members and friends are encouraged to keep the discipline of their Lenten Coin Folder. The proceeds from these folders are given to different charitable organizations outside the church. Faith in Action: Prince of Peace is proud to support the work of the Laurel Volunteer Care Givers Association (Faith in Action). Faith in Action is a group that endeavors to enhance the quality of life for persons 60 years and older (at no charge) by providing companionship and assistance. LAIVC is a program modeled after the national Faith in Action program and provides services such as appointment escort, caregiver relief, correspondence/paperwork assistance, errands/shopping assistance, visitor and transportation among others. The youth of our congregation participated in the annual leaf raking project in November. For more information about Faith in Action, call their office at 724/539-4357 or email at faithinaction@msn.com Glade Run Lutheran Services: Prince of Peace is pleased to support the work of Glade Run Lutheran Services. Glade run is a 151 year old organization that ministers to orphans and other children at risk. Latrobe Ministerial Association: Prince of Peace is a member of the Latrobe Ministerial Association. This group of pastors from all denominations in the Greater Latrobe Area work together to bring unity and help to our community. One of the major functions of the group is the Centralized Assistance Agency. This agency is funded by the Ministerium member churches and serves by assisting families in need with everything from rent to utilities to emergency food baskets. ELCA World Hunger Appeal: The ELCA World Hunger appeal is an on-going part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Prince of Peace encourages its members to give to people at home and around the world. Not just as disasters happen, but as part of their stewardship and in thanks for their blessings. We Are An Open Door: As part of our desire to welcome the larger community to Prince of Peace, we regularly host the meetings of the following organizations: Prince of Peace Preschool and Miracles at Work (Narcotics Anonymous) For more information on any of these outreach ministries, please contact Pastor Bill or the church office.
